The Prescription for all Patients? What if there was one prescription that could prevent and treat dozens of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity? Would you prescribe it? Certainly.
Exercise is Medicine!
Exercise and physical activity are important to health and the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases.
More should be done to address physical activity and exercise in healthcare settings.
All physicians and healthcare providers are urged to make exercise consultation a regular, important part of your interaction with every patient at every visit.
Can a “Home Program” Trump PT?
One “substitute” for supervised physical therapy might be the “home program.” Home exercise programs are a routine part of most physical therapy episodes of care. However, utilization of a home exercise program with an in-office pamphlet or handout is different.
Home exercise program efficacy consists of 2 parts:
Skill Acquisition (psychomotor accuracy)
Compliance
In other words, patients must “do the right thing the right way,” and “keep doing it” for efficacy to be achieved. Consultation with a physical therapist is needed to effectively prescribe and utilize exercise as part of the physical therapy management of a patient. It is essential that you develop a collaborative relationship with a physical therapy group that you can trust to help administer this exercise prescription.
